For 1v1 most players do China north vs korea

Vietnam sm is pretty strong, but you need to gain some sort of advantage before Korea gets op income. Aim for Bangladesh and Thailand T1 and complete them by 2nd turn. Taiwan is an important foothold to get T1 and good money. Use your binders sparingly and inf for good rolls, only using 3/4 bombers for 8 mil and 5/6 for inf. You can get an expansion dwarfing Koreas with money left over for T3. Send troops to the gulf and get money there.

I've actually done pretty well with imp vietnam

Very hard to beat sk with vietnam. Best chance is some sort of early rush with sm or lb. China north is the best counter. You can try countering it with some gw middle east pick too if you want a long game.
