The key is playing alot and playing with the same people numerous times, you'll eventually know who is trust worthy. What I used to do is everyone was guilty untill proven innocent,which means I expected everyone to back stab me untill I got to know them.

oh but backstabbing is only fun if the person knows you and doesn't even consider your betrayal.

Every time I play a three player game, they ally against me. I just abandoned a world game with 3 players for that reason.
